I saw four of the five movies in the Cremaster Cycle in the past week - Cremaster 1, 2, 4, and 5. I really liked one of them, thought another was pretty interesting, disliked one, and really disliked the fourth. I’m looking forward to seeing the fifth film - Cremaster 2 - this week.
I’m planning on reading up on them and hope to understand them a bit more with more context. Here is, in the order I saw the films, my first take at understanding the films, after seeing each of the films once and not yet reading about them -
Cremaster 4 - Two, perhaps three stories evolve in parallel - Matthew Barney plays the part of a tap-dancing demon with large sores on his scalp who taps his way through the floor at the end of a pier and then crawls through a webby white slime-filled passage in a birth-like sequence, two beautifully colored pairs of motorcycle & sidecar drivers speed around a beautiful island while strange slimy amobeas crawl out of their pockets, and three naked red-haired assistant pit demons assist both Matthew Barney and the motorcycle teams.
Cremaster 5 - Not so clear in my memory - I remember the following things - A clown climbing a lattice over a stage (this made me uncomfortable a bit because of my falling experience. this is the first time i was ever uncomfortable due to such things.), baths in budapest, a beautiful scene with 5 white chickens decend through a pillow on the flow into a room with baths below.
Cremaster 1 - Goodyear blimps, blue football field, formations of ladies in far-out 60’s space-dresses.
Cremaster 2 - Bees, murder at a gas station, world fair exposition center, monster trucks, rodeo, bull, buffalos, hostile music. I really disliked it. It could have been because I was really hungry & fidgety.
