le tigre

I saw Le Tigre last night. It was quite a multimedia feminist grrl rap hip-hop rock experience. The band is three singers/musicians - Kathleen Hanna (formerly of Bikini Kill), Johanna Fateman, and J.D. Samson. Deerhoof opened.

The dancing was aerobic and music was loud and driving, but much of the tunes were programmed (drums, some music and samples), allowing the ladies to rap & sing along. Behind the band was a large projection of videos made by Le Tigre and their Brooklyn buddies. The biggest stand-out for me was a synchronized dance sequence where two girls with big cartoonish hair danced in synchronicity for the whole song.

They also played a bunch of new drum-and-base-style grrl songs. The show was all-ages, so the crowd was full of kids with more energy than I can usually muster on a Monday night. I was personally a bit disappointed that so much was sequenced, but enjoyed the show overall.
