I watched the third Presidential debate last night. I can’t believe that George Bush has such a large percentage of the voting public behind him. It’s a bit scary, actually.
First off, his policy on Iraq is absurd. The war on Iraq was planned out by Bush’s droog supporters long before 9-11. The administration used the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center as an excuse to invade Iraq. Read the texts of the Project for the New American Century if you’re interested in the next few wars that America will enter if Bush gets re-elected. This conservative right-wing “think-tank” includes or included Dick Cheney, Jeb Bush, Dan Quayle, Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz during the Clinton Administration. These are people that believe that the best way to make America safer is to boost defense spending & strike down leaders of countries such as Iraq because they represent a threat of “chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons” (direct quote from New American Century 3 April 2002. The environment of fear created by the Administration (we’re yellow today, but may be orange tomorrow!) is key in keeping the American public scared enough to steer Mr. Bush into another 4 years of ‘leadership’ in our fiercely divided country.
Secondly, I believe that we need to change the way the tax structure in the US encourages companies ‘outsource’ their work to offshore or foreign companies or ‘insource’ menial agricultural and janitorial jobs in the US to people who can’t benefit from the freedoms that I enjoy as an American citizen. I live in California where a large portion of Central Valley fields are harvested by migrant workers - Mexican & Filipino working on cattle ranches, vegetable and grain farms - Barley, Corn, Wheat, Beets, Oats, Rice. America depends on the work that these people do and should provide them with rights commensurate to the benefits that they give to the country’s citizens. It is also important that the government acknowledges that the reason that it is one of the most powerful governments in the world is because of the work done by the people of the United States. I’m just a creative Computer Scientist & musician so I don’t understand the way Bush’s people think. Perhaps my father isn’t rich enough for me to understand.
Perhaps I’ll write more tomorrow because it’s getting past my bedtime.
