new song - a prime example

This new one is my first experiments in math-based music - several repeating musical phrases of different lengths. Notes are all the same length, but one phrase is 3 notes long, one 4, one 5, one 7, and (if I remember correctly) one 11 notes long.
It’s not terribly dynamic, and was thrown together in […]

new song - taco truck

This little punk ditty ties together a few very different things - a bit of environmental description, love, taco trucks, Brooklyn, Manhattan, family values.
Listen to
taco truck then go make some music!

new song - what you know

We’ll kick off the new public life with a 12-bar blues - guitar, singing, and tight harmonica solo.
some of the lyrics speak the truth -
every day you do things based on what you know
you wouldn’t have done thing A if you knew thing B
(and that’s what you know now)

music mavericks

Today was day two of my affair with american music mavericks, a wonderful resource for modern American music put together by Minnesota Public Radio.
Today they streamed Philip Glass, John Cage, Steve Reich - inspirational experimental music. Definitely check it out.

Calexico, Can, Christina Alguilera

Calexico - good.
Can - german.
Christina Alguilera - at least i can say i’ve given it a try.

Liliput/Kleenex

Lilliput, previously called Kleenex! is awesome.
Punk/New Wave Swiss kids from the late seventies formed Kleenex in 1978 in Zurich - one guy and four girls playing a new kind of music. They toured Europe as Kleenex until Kimberly Clark (owner of the KLEENEX copyright) threatened to sue. They changed their name to LiliPUT, […]

Buscuelo is the place for downtempo and flowing global beats - hip-hop, modern jazz, reggae, deep house, afrobeats - whatever Nat Rahav can drum up. Smooth. Check it!

le tigre

I saw Le Tigre last night. It was quite a multimedia feminist grrl rap hip-hop rock experience. The band is three singers/musicians - Kathleen Hanna (formerly of Bikini Kill), Johanna Fateman, and J.D. Samson. Deerhoof opened.
The dancing was aerobic and music was loud and driving, but much of the tunes were programmed […]

cornershop

Any way you want it - get on down!
Any way you see it - get on down!
Clear all the databox, call the destroyer.
Clear all the databox, kill all producer.
Get down…
Cornershop are awesome. A cross between noise rock and sitar serenity, Cornershop is a quirky band of British (Indian and Pakistani imports?) kids that range […]
